Dear member of SGBGJ,

Dear member of SGBGJ,
I would like to inform you that by the end of June 2008 Mrs. Renate Husseini resigned from her job as coordinator of SGBG activities.
Mrs. Renate Husseini:
I am happy to say that it was a very stimulating and interesting time. I took this decision because I will be quite a lot out of the country in autumn and next winter and carrying on with SGBG would give me quite an organisational headache. In fact, I am also quite looking forward to being an ordinary member of the Group, attending pleasant functions without any responsability in their preparation. So I do bid you good bye as your coordinator, website editor, newsletter editor and many more, but hope to meet you as frequently and regularly as before during the SGBG events. Our planned lecture/social gathering on Wednesday 18th of June will be somehow my farewell "party" and I hope to meet many of our members there. Good luck and long life to the Saudi German Business Group!

<>Highlights of the Past
Visit :
Under the leadership of our member, Mr. Bernd Moeller, a group of 6 cars set out early morning to an immensely pleasurable week-end trip. We arrived in Tayma in the afternoon having had our picnic lunch by the impressive Khaibar Dam and were received very kindly by Dr. Hausleiter, the head of the onsite archaeological team in Tayma. He had organised everything for us: Hotel rooms were booked, we had our meals with the archaeologists and the next day, he spent the whole morning leading us around the excavation sites and explaining all of it. In the afternoon we first had a visit to the storage room, where all the findings are kept, and then set out with Dr. Hausleiter and even Prof. Eichmann, who had arrived in the meantime, to visit different places in Tayma: A huge well (said to be the biggest in Saudi Arabia) where more than 70 camels could draw water in the same time, a mudbrick castle with crenellated walls, and finally we watched a beautiful sunset from some antique ruins on a rocky outcrop overlooking the now dried out salt lake (sabkha) which still had water in antiquity.

Lecture:
Social gathering with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Ricardo Eichmann on the latest excavation findings in Tayma. 16.04.2008

We were very happy to have Prof. Eichmann again here in Jeddah and - especially for the Tayma party - his lecture was nicely complementary to what we had seen and heard on the excavation site.

Concert:
Artis Piano Quartet. Concert of classical music. 01.05.2008
This marvelous concert of three piano quartets (Mozart, Paul Juon and J. Brahms) by a highly professional chamber music ensemble from Germany has been the highlight of Jeddah's cultural events this year. The members of the Quartet are not only outstanding musicians but also extremely nice people and it was a pleasure spending some time with them. You might have heard of their concert in Riyadh, where for the first time ever a classical music concert performed by a mixed ensemble was attended by a mixed audience in a public auditorium in Saudi Arabia.

I still have quite a few membership cards which I will bring to the event on the 18th. of June. Please remind me of handing them out to you if you haven't yet got yours.

Discounts: Since the beginning of the year we have been trying with the kind help of our Board member, Mr. Mangera,  to obtain a discount from Lufthansa for SGBG members, hopefully it will be granted soon.

Miscellaneous: Found on the Internet
http://www.arabnews.com/

Arab News ? Everybody knows it, but did you know that they have quite a nice website ?Let's have a closer look into it.

The homepage gives immediately access to the articles of the day arranged under 9 headings like Kingdom, Gulf, World, Islam, Business etc. Several of these headings have one or more subdivisions. Let's take for instance 'Kingdom', which is divided into :Local Press, Community News, The law & you, Art & Culture, Review. Most of the articles are additionally accessible by icons, representing most of the principal headings. You may find the Saudi 'logo' for 'Kingdom', a globe for 'World' etc. The access to the articles of the day is free, the search engine works quite well and sorts the articles found for your search chronologically, newest first. The search by date of edition in the archives on the contrary does not seem to work. All in all a pleasant website ensuring you will not miss your favourite Newspaper when out of the country.
