Dear member of SGBGJ,

As you can see below, SGBG is very active this year and I am very happy to inform you that we have already around 60 full members for the year 2008.
In the beginning of this year the composition of the SGBG Board of administrators has changed and you will be able to check out the new Board members on the SGBG website in a few days.
As usual I must express my wish for a more active participation of our members, that could be a suggestion for a visit of an interesting place or institution, somebody coming forward and proposing a lecture, some feedback after an event or  to the newsletter.
But I must say that this year
my wishes are more or less fulfilled, because I have had at least 3 of our members proposing an interesting lecture, and I was very pleased about several encouraging emails after the lunch at the Rosewood Hotel.
I hope you will all enjoy the upcoming events and the following newsletter will inform you on what's on in May and June before the traditional summer break.

German Food Festival at the Jeddah Hilton Hotel and a photo exhibition of stunning underwater pictures of the Red Sea, by a German photographer, member of the German Community in Jeddah. 22 - 29. 03.2008.
It is part of the Saudi - German Cultural Weeks, celebrated this spring in Riyadh and in Jeddah, and placed under the patronage of the German Consul General.
Lunch & Dinner will be served in Al Safina Restaurant in Jeddah Hilton. The price for Lunch will be 125 SR + 15% Tax and 155 SR +15% Tax for Dinner.

Visit :
Archeological excavations in Tayma, Wednesday, 2nd - Friday, 4th of April 2008
SGBG has rescheduled our trip to Tayma (which unfortunately we had to cancel in the last minute in 2007)  to visit the archeological site and excavations there. We will travel in our own cars, lead by our member Mr. Bernd Moeller, who has a large experience of travels in Saudi Arabia. Accomodation will be reserved in a hotel near to the ruins and payment for accomodation and meals is to be made individually by each participant. As Tayma is some 800 km distant from Jeddah, we need 3 days for this trip, which means that participants must take the Wednesday (and eventually Thursday) off from work.
Please register for this trip by email to sgbgjrh@gmail.com
and please be so kind as to indicate how many empty seats you have in your car in order for us to eventually offer a seat to ladies wishing to come along alone. The number of cars should not exceed 6, so 2008 members have priority on a first come / first served basis.
Comment: Actually the group going to Tayma is already more or less established, but we still have some seats available in our cars.

If you wish to get some in-depth information about the results of the Tayma excavation campaigns of the German Archeological  Institute, please go to http://
www.dainst.org/index_3258_en.html

Additionally Jarir Bookstores sell a little book on Tayma's history which gives you an overview on its importance in ancient times.

Lecture:
Social gathering with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Ricardo Eichmann on the latest excavation findings in Tayma. 16.04.2008

As in 2006 when we already had the pleasure to listen to a most interesting lecture by Prof. Eichmann, we will be updated on the results of the latest excavation campaigns of the German Archeological Institute in Tayma. The lecture will be illustrated by a number of posters showing the archeological sites,  and of course we will continue the evening around a tasty buffet prepared by our favourite caterer. This lecture is of course an excellent complement to the visit of the excavation sites.

Concert:
Artis Piano Quartet. Concert of classical music. 01.05.2008
This outstanding concert by a very highly qualified chamber music ensemble will be the highlight of this year's spring events and will be free of charge for SGBG 2008 paid members and their spouses. The ticket for the general public will be 100 SR.- per person.
The "Artis Piano Quartet" ensemble was created in 1996 by four young musicians and could hardly be more international : Hiroko Atsumi, the pianist, is Japanese; Stefan Bornscheuer, the violinist, is German; Paul Pesthy, the violist, is American of Hungarian descent; and Marin Smesnoi, the cellist, is from Moldova and studied mainly in Moscow. Since its beginnings, the ensemble has specialized in the piano quartet repertoire from Classical to modern times, promotes the compositions of unjustly forgotten masters and also commissions new works in order to further talented composers of our time.
With the exception of the pianist
naturally, the members of the quartet are part of the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR.

<>Highlights of the Past
The SGBG year 2008 opened with a
Social Gathering in the Garden of the Residence, 30.01.2008.
Presentation by Mr. Volker Weiss, engineer at Deutsche Bahn, of the different railway projects in the Kingdom.

We had a nice crowd coming together for this very informative presentation and discussing things later in the evening around a tasty buffet prepared by the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Jeddah. We have to extend our special thanks to Mr. Weiss, because he rushed back earlier than planned from a business trip abroad, and joined us directly coming from the airport.

Last week we had a very special event :

Lunch at the Habsburg Restaurant of the Rosewood Hotel Jeddah. 13.03.2008
More than 50 people came to have a first taste of what the brandnew Rosewood Hotel could offer : a highly refined lunch buffet, in a beautiful setting with an allround  view of the sea, and after the lunch an interesting tour of the hotel with as a highlight the visit of the magnificent swimming pool area on the roof; unfortunately for us ladies this area is "men only" but they made an exception for our visit.
