Dear member of SGBG,
In our beloved german language, we say "Was lange währt, wird
endlich gut", which means approximately : "what takes a long time to be
worked out, will in the end be very good". Applied to the SGBG
Newsletter, you have been waiting for its first issue for quite some
time now, and we hope that you will be satisfied with the result. We
are very eager to have your feedback about this test number, and we
would especially be very glad if you felt inspired to give us some
input for the following issues.
As you see the table of contents for the first time, some explanations
on what is hidden behind the different headings might come in useful.
Future Events will give you some hints on what is planned for
the coming months, but, please, be aware that dates, locations,
speakers etc. might still change, especially if the announced event is
a little far away.
Highlights of the Past tries to provide comprehensive
summaries on important events of the last 2 or 3 months.

Saudi -German week in Abha : 15-17.06 2004
Abha, one of the major economic hubs in the
kingdom, seeks to attract German tourists and German companies.
Already, German companies such as Siemens and Daimler&Chrysler are
firmly established in the Abha region. Furthermore, Abha is much
interested in Germany as a tourist site and as a country to provide
study opportunities. As a first step, a “German week” in the Abha Palace
Hotel is meant to inform people in Abha about Germany in a very broad
sense. This initiative finds the support of the Governor and the whole
political elite in Abha. The "german week " will consist of
- an exhibition in the premises of the Abha Palace Hotel, with
information material on German culture, tourist hot spots, study
opportunities, German language etc. provided by the German Consulate
General. The German Consul General will be present at the “German
Week“. The exhibition will be opened by the Governor of Abha and will
find a lot of interest. Local decision makers and businessmen will be
invited. We plan to organize a group trip of our interested members to
Abha in order to participate in this Saudi-German week. More detailed
information will follow in due time.

University Jeddah, Dr. Nahed Taher (senior economist, NCB) was held on
the topic of water supply and water waste management. The challenge and
impact of the water problem in the Kingdom was impressively highlighted
by the panelists. There was a lively discussion following the

opportunities in Germany (30.03.2004 in the residence of the German
Consul General)
Representatives of the
German Academic Exchange Service (Dr. Hülshörster, Prof. Dr.
Spyra, Mr. Böhm) gave a very informative presentation on study
opportunities in Germany. The German delegation was in Jeddah for
presenting Germany in the Jeddah Education Fair (MEETES 04). The
presentation on 30th March triggered a lot of questions by the
audience. It has become clear that there is a rising interest in study
opportunities in Germany. The German Academic Exchange Service will
come back to Jeddah for next year’s Jeddah Education Fair and will
think about establishing a permanent information contact address here
in Jeddah. In our future website we will establish a link to the
