Editorial
Dear member of SGBGJ,
After quite a long break due to different circumstances your favorite
Newsletter is on the track again and will inform you regularly on past
and future events of the SGBGJ.
Our founding member and driving engine in the past two years, the
German Consul General, Dr. Stephan Keller, has left Jeddah in Juli to
take on his duties as the German Ambassador in Khartum (Sudan).
Fortunately the SGBG community is able to welcome his successor as
Consul General, Dr. Hubert Lang, who arrived in Jeddah in mid-August.
He already hosted the SGBG Iftar in the beautiful garden of the
residence
that our members know so well from countless 'Social gatherings' and so
gave the opportunity to all members to make his acquaintance. Dr. Lang
as well as his wife, Michèle, speak arabic which should
facilitate communication with the Saudi members of SGBG. Our best
wishes to Dr. Lang and to his wife for a happy stay in Jeddah and
a lot of interesting events and activities with and around SGBG!
Future Events
The Arabian Horse : A 2
days event with lectures, show of prized Arabian thoroughbreds and much
more: Mid-December 2005 (you will be informed of the exact
dates as soon as they are available)
This event is being planned and managed by the German
Consulate General together with the Cultural section of the French
Consulate General and Sheikh Ahmad Badreig, owner of a stud farm on the
outskirts of Jeddah, breeding stunningly beautiful Arab Thoroughbreds, who has very generously offered to host the event on his
premises. The invited public will include the members of SGBG
but it is not an SGBG-only event. European and Saudi specialists will
hold lectures and we will
have a show of these magnificent horses. All
necessary details will be provided as soon as
possible.
SGS
Geological
Fieldtrip to the Gulf of Aqaba Region : 18th - 24th of February 2006
A
seven day excursion to the Gulf of Aqaba
region is being organized by the Saudi Geological Survey. The trip
follows an earlier one at Madinah which
looked at the volcanoes in that area. However this trip will be longer
and more loosely organized.
Participants are expected to bring their own four-wheel drive vehicles
and
camping gear for one night. Participants
will drive themselves, fuel their cars and pay for their accommodation
and
food.The Saudi Geological Survey will
provide a guide book, two guides ( Dr. John Roobol and Mr. Mohammed
Al-Rehaili)
and obtain permits for travel in the area, especially the
coastline.
The Gulf of Aqaba is
a major fault and plate boundary where
110km of left lateral offset has occurred in the past 20 million years.
Concrete pillars recently
erected across
coastal fault zones are moving a few
millimeters per year. Spectacular fault
scarps are preserved in steep cliffs of shattered granite that plunge
into
water up to 1.8 km deep. The coastline
is in pristine condition but corals reefs are rising by tectonic uplift
and can
be found up to 98 meters above sea level with well preserved corals,
shells,
echinoids etc. In this little
inhabited
area there are many very scenic areas to visit from deep rock canyons
to
spectacular sandstone pillars. There are
Nabatean tombs similar to those at Madain Saleh at Al Bad.
DEADLINE. The trip will be for 30
persons (six of whom will
be from the Saudi Geological survey). A final list of
participants,their
nationality and passport numbers must be available by 17th December in
order
for SGS to get the permits to go onto the coastline.

John Roobol, SGS
Persons interested
to participate in this trip are kindly requested to contact Mrs. Renate
Husseini ( tahahusseini@hotmail.com ) to register.

Aramco and
SABIC voted most popular employers for Saudi
Graduates
|
|
see details
on : http://www.ameinfo.com/69652.html
Study carried out by a recruitment web site
confirms Saudi Aramco as first choice for top Saudi graduates, followed
by SABIC, SEC and STC.
Study also reveals 94% of graduates surveyed
want to remain in the Kingdom or return after gaining work experience
abroad
In a recently completed study top Saudi graduates ranked Saudi Aramco
as their number one choice to work for in the Kingdom, followed by
SABIC, SEC and STC.
The report, entitled "Recruiting Top Graduates in Saudi Arabia"
was based on a survey of recent graduates of the prestigious King Fahd
University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), the Kingdom's leading
university and academic institution.
While 54% of the graduates surveyed expressed interest in working
outside the country for at least a few years, the vast majority of
these stated that they would like to return after gaining some
international experience. Overall 94% of all graduates surveyed either
preferred to establish their career entirely in the Kingdom or to
return after gaining experience abroad. Only 6% of all
respondents would consider permanently relocating abroad.

German
Language Center
Actually available : The Summer 2006 Goethe Institut program for German
language courses in Germany. This program addresses young people
between 9 and 20 years old. The courses are usually hosted in a
beautiful environment and comprise cultural and sports activities in
addition to the language sessions.
Miscellaneous: Found on the Internet
For a change, let's have a look at the
site of the German Embassy in Riyadh
:
http://www.riad.diplo.de/en/Startseite.html
The site exists in
German and in English and offers a lot of interesting information under
the following headings :
Welcome
to Germany :
This page is
essentially meant for foreigners who would like to visit Germany, plan
to study or even to work there. List of portals for information about
Germany, visa requirements, regulations pertaining to the obtention of
a work permit in Germany, student exchange programs and much more.
The
Embassy:
Location,
opening hours, biography of the ambassador, the different sections and
their assigned tasks etc.
Foreign
and European policy :
Apart from a link
to the official site of the German Foreign Office, you will find a
chapter on Saudi-German relations , which unfortunately proved a little
poor on a closer look. Under "Rreciprocal Visits" you still find only a
photo of Chancellor Schröders visit to Riyadh two years ago,
"Bilateral Relations" shows an Error page, and "Current event" as
well as "Links from the World of politics and diplomacy" are empty
pages.
Information
for German Nationals :
details the whole
range of consular services from passports to 'child abduction',
marriages or life certificates
Economy:
Mostly a list of
links established by the Ministry in Germany. The for us most
interesting heading "Links to institutions in Saudi Arabia" proves to
be empty for the moment.
Culture
and education :
Same result for this
section: "Bilateral cultural relations" is actually an empty link but
as the heading has been introduced, we might suppose that very soon we
will find some information under this heading.
Conclusion : All in all a good starting point for information on
Germany and once the specific information on bilateral Saudi - German
issues will have been added it will be a really very informative
website.
