Editorial
Dear member of
SGBGJ,
Summer has gone by as well
as Ramadan and Eid al Fitr and November is already starting, everybody
looking forward to the break at the end of the year. But in the
meantime SGBG has several interesting events in store for you, the
details of which you will find in the section 'Future Events' below.
Here I am happy
to take the opportunity to wish a hearty welcome to the new
German Consul General, Dr. Michael Zickerick. He is coming from
Teheran, where he served as a high ranking member of the German Embassy.
I would equally
like to inform you that our chairman, Sheikh Khaled
Juffali, has been awarded the German 'Bundesverdienstkreuz' (German
decoration)
handed over to him by the German Ambassador, Dr. Krieghoff, during a
recent ceremony. Sincere congratulations to our chairman!

Many of us will remember the beautiful concert

pleased to have them coming again and would like to thank our former
Consul General, Dr. Hubert Lang, actually German ambassador in Bahrain,
for having invited them again to the Arabian Peninsula. We hope that
most of you will still be in Jeddah and consider this concert as a
brillant closing of a very eventful year.
Highlights
of the Past
Iftar
in the al-Yasmine Restaurant of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 23.09.2007
SGBG offered to
its members a somptuous
Iftar in this very nicely decorated restaurant. Obviously quite a few
of our members were still out of the country or busy with their
families as it was the National Day, but there has still been a nice
crowd enjoying the food and the company and we had the opportunity to
meet Dr. Zickerick for the first time.

PERSGA : Regional Organization for the Conservation
of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden;
Headquarters in Jeddah
http://www.persga.org
PERSGA's Mission: To perform
the functions necessary for the implementation of the Jeddah
Convention on a sustained and cost effective basis, aiming at rational
use of living and non-living marine
and coastal resources in a manner ensuring optimum benefit for the
present generation while maintaining the potential of that environment
to satisfy the needs and aspirations of future generations.
PERSGA
Objective 2006-2010: To improve the sustainable management
and use of the RSGA’s coastal and marine resources. Sustainable
management and use will be reflected in reduced threats to the
environment, improved livelihoods of participating coastal communities
and improved institutional, legal and financial arrangements.
The Organization:
|
PERSGA,
the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of
the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, is an intergovernmental body dedicated to
the conservation of the coastal and marine environments found in the
Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba, Gulf of Suez, Suez Canal, and Gulf of Aden
surrounding the Socotra Archipelago and nearby waters. PERSGA’s member
states include: Djibouti, Egypt,
Jordan, the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
PERSGA’s legal basis stems from Article XVI of the Regional Convention
for the Conservation of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, known as the
Jeddah Convention[1], signed
in 1982: “A Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Red Sea
and Gulf of Aden Environment, the permanent headquarters of which shall
be located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is hereby established". It was not
until September 1995, however, with the signing of the Cairo Declaration[2] during the First Council Meeting in
Egypt, that PERSGA’s creation was formally announced. Falling under the
umbrella of the Arab League, PERSGA has since become recognized as one
of the leading marine conservation organizations operating in the Red
Sea region.
The development of PERSGA’s Strategic Action Plan in 1997 provides
the operational mandates governing PERSGA’s conservation activities and
programmes. Taking a step-by-step approach, the SAP was prepared on the
premise that it would be implemented in phases, each with its own set
of particular priorities and areas of focus. The first Phase of the SAP
was implemented during 1999-2005 with the support of GEF. As of 2006,
PERSGA has been conducting its work under SAP Phase
2, which concentrates primarily on sustainable development and
institutional strengthening.
PERSGA's activities focus on the following fields :
Education, Research & Monitoring, Public Awareness, Oceanography,
Habitats & Biodiversity, Living Marine Resources, Marine Protected
Areas, Persistence Organic Pollutants, Sustainable Development......
Assessment of the
Website :
These
fields are represented as specific sections of PERSA's apparently
recent Website. The Website has a pleasant lay-out and a comprehensive
structure, but suffers unfortunately from a lot of spelling mistakes,
especially in the very interesting photo library.
Moreover
there seems to be a lay-out problem, because in many sections a small
window-link covers part of the text, making reading very difficult.
In the photo section the general reader
will be puzzled sometimes about an apparently incoherent mixture of
photos of - let's say fishes - and some important people during a
meeting; under the heading "Living Marine Resources" for
instance, I found a photo of the roofs of a Jordanian city, for me this
has nothing to do with Marine Resources.......
On
the Website you will find the entire text of the so called "Jeddah
Convention", which is the basic framework for PERSGA.
The
heading "RSGA Region" displays descriptions and some typical images of
the seven member countries of PERSGA.
A "Documentation Centre" completes the Website usefully.
All
in all, the website proves to be very interesting but needs some
technical improvements.
