Editorial
Dear member of
SGBGJ,
During the past three months SGBG has
offered you several great events and now has come the time to wish all
of you a pleasant vacation and a happy new year!
As we say in German : "Guten Rutsch...." We hope to have you again as a
member of our group in 2008 and also hope to attract more new members.
The programme for the first term is in the making and you will hear
more about it in your next Newsletter in January. Let me simply tell
you already that we plan more functions like the one which starred
Roger Harrison at the beginning of this month, i.e. a combination of an
interesting lecture with an informal social get-together and some nice
food.
We want these lectures to become a little more business oriented and
invite any person who has something interesting to tell about economic
projects involving both sides, Germans and Saudis, to come forward and
propose to speak.
We also wish to revive the Tayma project (visit of the archeological
excavations by German archeologists) , which we unfortunately had to
cancel this year because of the killing of several French people in the
desert around the same period.
Last but not least, several concerts are in the pipes with highly
professional artists from Germany.
So: stay with us, become a member; your financial contribution to the
Saudi German Business Group enables the management to offer you a wide
range of business, cultural and entertaining events.

Highlights
of the Past
Iftar
in the al-Yasmine Restaurant of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 23.09.2007
SGBG offered to
its members a somptuous
Iftar in this very nicely decorated restaurant. Obviously quite a few
of our members were still out of the country or busy with their
families as it was the National Day, but there has still been a nice
crowd enjoying the food and the company and we had the opportunity to
meet Dr. Zickerick for the first time.
Piano Concert in Sierra, 26th of November
2007.
Pianist : Andreas Henkel
This
concert by an outstanding German
pianist was a pure delight for all present, especially as the well
balanced programme included famous pieces, such as the "Chromatische
Fantasie und Fuge" by Johann Sebastian Bach, and the "Appassionata"
sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. One of the Chopin piano sonatas
concluded the concert brillantly. Around 130 to 140 people attended the
concert which is a very encouraging number and prompts us to renew the
experience in 2008.
Social
Gathering in the Garden of the Residence, 5th of December 2007.
PP presentation by Roger Harrison : " Winds over Saudi Arabia", the
tale accompanied by stunning pictures of a one week glider's flight
over the Kingdom.
Around
100 persons gathered in the
garden of the German Consul General's residence to listen to Roger
Harrison and then enjoyed the little delicacies prepared by the Crowne
Plaza Hotel. All were very impressed by the daring flight of three
glider planes, two of them conducted by members of the Royal Family.
All our thanks go to Mr. Harrison for having accepted to speak to us.
This was the
closing function of SGBG activities in 2007 because the
planned 'flute and piano' concert had been canceled due to difficult
timing.

Members'
Corner:
Regarding the
discount numerous companies are ready to offer to SGBG
members: In January your coordinator will call all these companies to
be sure that the discount offer is still valid in 2008.
We would be very
happy if some of the companies you work with or
eventually you own would accept to join the number of these "Friends of
SGBG".

Miscellaneous: Found on
the Internet
The Saudi
Geological Survey : http://www.sgs.org.sa
this
Website is
one of the best organized and most informative I have seen for quite
some time. All you would want to know about mineral resources and their
exploitation in Saudi Arabia, as well as for instance about the
formation, tide, salinity or geological composition of the Red Sea, you
will find it here, well explained even for the general reader,
illustrated with maps and pictures.
The main headings comprise : geology (contains a superb photo gallery),
mineral resources, geohazards, geophysics in SA, earthquakes,
oceanography and marine science.
These scientific chapters are followed by an outline of SGS activities,
SGS services and products and the heading "Research and studies". Here
you will find three very different sections : Cave exploration, the
Empty Quarter expedition results and - astonishingly - the "Zamzam
Studies and Research Center". In fact the reader learns that the Zamzam
Well inside the precincts of the Holy Mosque in Makkah is monitored,
explored, and managed by the SGS. The comprehensive management of this
natural source of water is of cause of very big concern to the
authorities because of the increasing number of pilgrims who threaten
to deplete the source by excessive demand.
The
Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) was established as an independent entity
attached to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources following a
Council of Ministers Decision in 1999.The
tasks and duties of the SGS are similar to those of most geological
surveys worldwide, and include mapping, grass-roots mineral
exploration, geohazard and geoenvironmental studies, hydrogeological
studies and services to the community. The SGS maintains support teams
of geophysicists, remote sensors, GIS and database specialists, as well
as laboratory and publication arms, that will allow it to provide a
full range of earth-science information about the Kingdom.
